چکیده

We present new Chandra observations of 21 z > 4 quasars, including 11 sources at z > 5. These observations double the number of X-ray detected quasars at z > 5, allowing investigation of the X-ray spectral properties of a substantial sample of quasars at the dawn of the modern Universe. By jointly fitting the spectra of 15 z > 5 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), including sources from the Chandra archive, with a total of 185 photons, we find a mean X-ray power-law photon index of Γ = 1.95+0.30 −0.26, and a mean neutral intrinsic absorption column density of NH < ∼ 6×10 22 cm−2. These results show that quasar X-ray spectral properties have not evolved up to the highest observable redshifts. We also find that the mean optical–X-ray spectral slope (αox) of opticallyselected z > 5 RQQs, excluding broad absorption line quasars, is αox = −1.69±0.03, which is consistent with the value predicted from the observed relationship between αox and ultraviolet luminosity. Four of the sources in our sample are members of the rare class of weak emission-line quasars, and we detect two of them in X-rays. We discuss the implications our X-ray observations have for the nature of these mysterious sources and, in particular, whether their weak-line spectra are a consequence of continuum boosting or a deficit of high-ionization line emitting gas. Subject headings: galaxies: active – galaxies: nuclei – X-rays: galaxies – quasars: general – quasars: emission lines

Quasars at z > 4 provide direct information on the first massive structures to form in the Universe. Recent ground-based optical surveys (e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey) have discovered large numbers of high-redshift quasars, increasing the number of known quasars at z > 4 to ≈ 500. Most of these quasars are suitable for follow-up X-ray studies. Here we review X-ray studies of the highest r...

Chandra Observations of Three SDSS

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at redshift z ≈ 6 (Fan et al. 2001) are the most distant condensed objects known in the universe. X-ray observations of them are of great importance; e.g., to study the cosmic time evolution of X-ray emission and to assess the detectability of quasar X-ray emission at even larger redshifts. All three quasars were easily detected in X-rays even in thes...

Chandra Observations of Red Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasars

We present short Chandra observations of twelve bright (i<18) zem∼1.5 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey chosen to have significantly redder optical colors than most quasars at the same redshift. Of the five quasars with optical properties most consistent with dust reddening at the quasar redshift, four show indirect evidence of moderate X-ray absorption (inferred NH∼ 10 22 cm) with a du...

The X-ray Properties of the Most-luminous Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Utilizing 21 new Chandra observations as well as archival Chandra, ROSAT, and XMM-Newton data, we study the X-ray properties of a representative sample of 59 of the most optically luminous quasars in the Universe (Mi ≈ −29.3 to −30.2) spanning a redshift range of z ≈ 1.5–4.5. Our full sample consists of 32 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3 (DR3) quasar catalog, two...

A Chandra Search for X-ray Jets in Redshift 6 Quasars

We have searched for X-ray jets in the recent Chandra observations of three Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at redshift z ≈ 6. All 3 quasars were detected in X-rays in these relatively short observations. SDSS1030+0524 is not consistent with a point source, and may be a gravitationally lensed system. We find a possible jet-like feature 23 from the quasar SDSS 1306+0356. We can explain t...
